UV sterilizer/protein skimmer

I am setting up my tank again since I have move from FL to SC. I had a SV sterilizer that was damage during move. I would like to know if it needed for a general fish tank no reef? Also if a protein skimmer is needed. I have a 58 gal tank.

You will need a protein skimmer but a sterilizer is optional. They are quite controversial. Some people swear by them, others say they kill the good bacteria too and not to use them in a reef. Hope this helps..
