They are usually made oyt of a piece of pvc pipe. Inside they have a Ultra violet light that water passes through. The bulb is housed in a quartz sleeve that magnifies the light and allows for easy bulb replacement. they supposably prevent paracitic outbreaks.and also cut down on algae growth. I'm not convinced they are neccisary.STEVE

I would agree that they aren't essential...
But I wouldn't trade mine in for anything
My water quality is great and no parasites to be found
It kills EVERYTHING!!!
I think it is most useful when introducing new fish to your tank... Any parasites on the fish can be caught and killed by the UV.
