It really depends on your setup. UV helps control algae, but so do snails and planting macro algae. UV also kills certain microbes, but so does ozone if you use a skimmer. I'm eventually going to a berlin system which basically is as natural as you can get. Coral love a good colony of microbes to feed on and unless you're suplimenting your water, UV will only hurt the microbes.

it realy doesnot matter the set up, UV's are NOT ever necesary. in fact they are normally frownded upon and in many instances advised against.
this is one of those catch 22 situations,
they do have their good points but these do not outweigh the bad.
in fact his is merely my opinion, but if my wife ever brought one home, i would probably bust it instead of sending it back for a refund. being as my opinion is only garbage anyhow.

I actually have one. I keep it off a majority of the time, only firing it up when I either put new fish in the tank or I get a outbreak of some disease. My experience has been that it controls very well the outbreak, keeping it to the fish it came in one. Can you run w/o one sure, am I personally glad I have one that I can run absolutely.
