UV Sterilizer

It is not important to have a UV sterilizer in any set-up. There are many more mportant things to spend your money on (live rock, good filter, protein skimmer, RO/DI unit, powerheads, heaters, better test kits, refractometer) and if you you have extra money when you are done buying all of those things, then maybe think about getting a UV if you really want to spend more money on your tank.

Obviously from the differences of opinions, sterilizers are not absolutely necessary for a healthy system. I run one as a preventative measure and so far so good. The problem is that it is impossible to conclusively know what the sterilizer is preventing. I agree with the above post that you should buy the necessities first (ie. good filtration, protein skimmer) and a sterilizer should probably come last... JMO

I've never had a UV filter and have never had a disease.
Without going into a lengthy discussion or explanation, they are worthless in my humble opinion.
