a uv steralizer also helps break down suspended organic matter that can compremise water quality and become a nuscance. such as diatoms and excess nanochloropsis (phytoplanketon) and help with controlling ich and other fish diseases. in my opinion it is a great tool for the reef aquarium if you use it correctly.

I'v been told against it on a reed tank. But I agree with "fishamajig".
Some of the best reef tanks i'v seen use UV sterilizers...because most people usually have extra nutrients...

my tank goes against the grain of MOST reefers in this forum, not only do i use a UV, but i also use miracle mud.... on the topic of the UV ...im so very glad i have it... i dont have any outbreaks of ich (knock on wood) ...i've introduced fish with ich (stress related)....and the ich came off within a couple days...and no other fish caught it...so im a firm believer in having it.... some people leave theres on for part of the day...and part off... leave it on 24/7 ... now it is said that it hurts good bacteria as well.... this is true.... but being honest...i cant tell ... i dont have alege outbreaks either... more importantly ...NO RED SLIME!...hehe...
best of luck to you

well i dont think it does much for the red slime. a uv steralizer only kills free floating micro organisms and protozoans, cyanobacteria (red slime) usuially forms on sand and rock work and would not have a chance to be killed due to the fact that it dosent pass over the uv light.

Well I dont have a UV sterilizer and i've never had a ich outbreak. :p
It really isnt horribly bad to have a UV sterilizer for a reef tank. The only thing is they do good for a tank and bad at the same time. Similar to a protein skimmer in how it removes bad stuff and good stuff. Of course uv's arent nearly as helpful as protein skimmers.. but it was only an example :)

yes, but if you scrub the rock...it leaves..and the spours are killed

yea if yo scrub the rock, but once you have sps on that rock you arent going to be able to take them out of the tank so easy. but that is true.
