I personally don't care for them, I really don't think you need one. But the answer really depends on what type of tank you have and why you think you need one. I think there are more cons that pros involved with them

Agreed...
The only people I have ever found to point out the cons are people who have never used them.

I run mine 24/7 but my only problem is I think they fry your pods on the way back into the tank.
