I'm having a probelm with hair algae in my tank, will UV sterilizers kill it, or only floating algae? I have a PC, great filters and skimmer on my 55, 8 hours of light, numerous corals, fish and inverts, i checked my phosphate levels and they weren't high according to my test hit by seachem. I've tried snails, crabs etc but they won't eat it, my algae eatign blenny and yellow eye tang won't touch it either? Please help if you can, also, is distilled water good for water changes even though when i first started my tank I used tap water????

well... my algae blenny did do some work on my hair algae, but it only came around when my nitrates shot up. once i got that back under control, the hair algae went away. of course, this was over a few weeks of blenny munching. good luck.
oh.... uv should only help free floating algae.

The problem with testing for Phophates and nitrates when you have an algae problem is that they are almost allways much higher than what your test shows. The results are only showing what the algae is not eating. You have poor water,or your lights are on too long. These are the only things that cause problem algae.A uv will help, but it can only kill what actually goes through it.The stuff growing in the tank will need to be removed.
