Depends on who you ask.
There has always been a 50/50 debate on that topic.
If you do have ick, and not a reef tank then there is NO harm in running UV.
If you do have reef, then you run the risk of losing pods. I bought 160 lbs of LR from a guy who ran an 18 watt UV.
Took me 3 weeks before one single amphipod was spotted! No bristles, no copepods, no mini brittles... Nothing!
I do believe they "sterilize" the beneficial critters. I also believe they sterilize ick, but the debate is... Does ick find it's way into the UV sterilizer since it is not a water column creature.
Wanna buy one I have one.

Fish only, or reef tank? I would never have a FO tank without one, helps with algae as well as I don't use an RO system. 6 years of tanks with a UV and not QTing fish, I have never had ick...I am knocking on wood as I type
I currently have a 40 watt UV on a 240 and yes I have a refugium.

Are you using a Refugium? I thought by havinga a refugium that would produce all those things you mentioned...... I dont know what to believe my fish guy tells me what he wants to sell me something.

You can certainly make your own decision. If it is used to treat ich, then the UV is not very effective. Ich spends VERY little time in the water column.

So I just lost my whole tank to ich...so i purchased a UV steralizer. The second time around I want to add live rock... is this not a good idea with the uv steralizer?? I have the same one you are trying to sell. I haven't added anything in my tank just yet. All that I have in it is broken coral for the bottom (no live sand).

I guess I never knew how ick got from one host to another, sounds like more through direct contact than "free swimming"?
Sounds like I better find a home for our Gold Groumi and turn my 25 gallon FW tank into a QT as I had planned on doing eventually.

I know I know, I just struggle with the idea of -for example- purchasing a $125 Sargassum Trigger (that I recently got) and putting him in a 25 gallon tank with less than stable water conditions compared to the 240 gallon DT with 40 gallon sump. But I know it kills the risk of introducing something to the DT and endangering the other fish...Catch 22 for me.

But I know it kills the risk of introducing something to the DT and endangering the other fish...Catch 22 for me.

That seems to be the common misconception. If you have a larger tank then plan on a lager qt. If you know that you will house sensitive or larger fish then plan on a 30 long or a 55 qt. You have to plan this stuff out. You cannot be spontaneous in this hobby. It is all you. You know what you want to keep. Have a FULLY cycled QT equipped to house those kinds of fish for 4-6 weeks. I, myself, keep a 20 and a 15 long running. My largest tank is a 55. I can keep any fish that I plan on happy for months in either one.

And to kinda add to what Sep is saying. If your QT is set up properly, it is as safe and as comfortable for the fish as your DT.
With my own personal QT, I have my little wrasse in there, but that temp tank is as comfy for him as my DT is gonna be. I would like to see him in the big tank but I don't think he cares either way...

EXACTLY correct Tizzo. The Qt should be a very comfortable place for the fish. I have kept fish in there for two months. My lion was in there for slightly less than two months. Not because I was afraid of parasite infestation, but because I wanted to be certain that he was healthy and eating well.
