UV Sterilizers

They use UltraViolate light to render microscopic organisms infertile therefore they are unable to reproduce. This helps with waterborne algaes, pathogens, and other waterborne diseases. The only down side is that it renders infertile not only bad organisms but also good organisms indescriminately.

A typical home aquarium does not have a uv sterilizer.
Uv sterilizers are mainly used in live fish store applications where large amounts of fish are traded out weekly. A typical home aquarist has a quarantine to treat livestock before entering the display aquarium.

Guess I'll have to show you my big UV sterilizer I have sitting!!!!!
UV sterilizers are always going to be debatable, and there really is no right or wrong answer as to if or not to use it or running it 24/7. Honestly if your going to run a UV, why wouldn't you run it 24/7....
You don't know, or can't see when the unwanteds are free floating, so you'd be playing a guessing game......

it clears the water but thats about it IMO
i shut my 85 watts UV because its doesnt really do much on my application
even with a very slow flow.
ozone in the other hand is the best sterilizer that i ever use
but you have to be careful because it can kill all your livestock and posibilty harmful if it leaks

I recently started running a UV on the 180, have to say that although my water was not dirty before hand, it cleared up a lot once I added the UV.

See how I figure is if I have a iv running on my main tank I will have no breakouts but that's not the case or is it?

No matter what precautions you take, something - somewhere will go wrong. Murphy's Law abounds. :D The best thing you can do is try to prevent it, which is what I admire about your thinking. The cheapest preventative measure you can get in a couple of emerald crabs. They will eat the bubble algae before it even gets a foothold.

I run a UV sterilizer on my 180g. I have run one since the beginning when I had an ick outbreak. A few fish survived, and I don't know if that helped, but hey I just had it sitting there so why not use it. And I don't like to use emerald crabs for bubble algae. They bust them which makes it spread. You are better off removing the rock and try to remove the bubble intact. OR use a hose to try and suction them off the rock, that way if you bust one, you are less likely to spread the spores. It can become like a plaque if your not careful. Some like it in their tanks, and some dont. I don't.
