UV Sterilizers

I just recently purchased an 8 watt Ultra Ultraviolet brand sterilizer. I really don't think the guy at the store knew what he was talking about and I might be set up all wrong from what I am reading online.
I have a 72 gallon bowfront and the sterilizer is hooked up to pull water from my sump and return back to the sump. Shouldn't it be hooked up to the return line to my tank? Or will the water pass to quickly to be effective. What is your recommendations on wattage, pump size and method of hook up? Thanks everyone

I have my UV connected to the return of my filter. Reason being, I want the filter to pull out all the big junk from the water, before it gets passed throught the UV. This minimizes the junk that is left on the UV bulb, which effects performance. But, it really depends on the type of UV you have. (ex. Wet bulb or dry bulb)...
Also, 8 watts for a 72 gallon tank might not be enough. I would go with twice that if I were you :) Just some FYI...
Good luck!!!
