Seems the most popular opinion, including my own, is yes, they are fine in reef tanks as long as you turn them off during feeding.

I don't know if it would actually make a difference or not. If you are squirting the food right to the corals, then probably it doesn't make any difference. But if you are just adding the food from the surface, then you will end up with cooked phytoplankton, for example. Maybe it doesn't make a difference, I guess I don't know.
