It's a check valve, but do not rely on them to stop your sump from overflowing. Check valves aren't dependable and even with a swing check valve it may slowly trickle water down into the sump slowly. You should still drill an air hole at the top of your return just in case. I have a swing check valve on my return just so the water level doesn't drop when I turn off the pump for feeding, but I made sure my sump won't overflow if the valve fails.
