I don't know if i can say this but here we go. Go to you tube and type in gordon ramsey:shark bait. This is a story about shark fining. It is very disturbing so please if weak at heart don't watch. People though need to be aware of what we are doing to the shark population.

It's interesting. I doubt that it's making a ton of impact on the entire ocean. Maybe just a certain cultural area. Still though, it's sad.

I don't understand why Gordon was there, or why they only are using the fins and drying them out. He is a chief, surely they don't eat dried shark fins. I know Gordon uses stingray fins and cuts them in discs as scallops.

For those of you who think Gordon Ramsey is never effected by a recession: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N327fjX-7to&feature=grec_index His sales dropped from 3 million a year to less than 400k. He racked up 9 million in unpaid debt and 8 million in unpaid bills. If it weren't for his 10 million dollar per year TV show, he wouldn't be in business.

Probably for shark fin soup. Very popular in some Asian countries.

In Indonesia and Vietnam they have a also have a dish called Balut, which is a fertilized baby duck, boiled and eaten out of the egg... Video!

The point of this for me was that he was trying to expose that sharks were being harvested just for their fins. I believe he was hoping to inform people and governments that their has to be something done about it. The fins are dried out and yes then made into soup and other dishes. When Gordon Ramsey tasted the dish he said their was no flavor and was basically a sign of wealth and tradition. The fins are worth more to the public then the shark meat so it is tossed back into the water to die. It is inhumane.

Well, it was pretty sad to see the sharks being harvested that way. I don't mind the sharks being caught, as long as the whole animal is used.
Edit: Also, the conditions that the fins were in were pretty gross.
