There are 2 types of ballasts, electronic and the old tar ballasts.If you are looking for electronic, go with an IceCap ballast.You can find them at Pet Warehouse, Champion Lighting and a lot of other places.With an IceCap you can run NO bulbs and they are supposed to burn at about 80% output of a VHO bulb.There was an article in FAMA about a year ago that explained how to do this.
To take full advantage of a vho ballast you should use vho bulbs.I like URI brand bulbs.A 1 to 1 mix of actinic and actinic/white bulbs looks nice.
Whatever bulbs you choose make sure you use vho endcaps.These are made to handle the extra current.HTH,Bob
