Volitan lion ?

Hi all,
Is there any difference between "black" and "red" Volitan lions? Are they separate species or is it just a difference of coloring? I've seen references on this board to Black Volitans and I notice that the store sells them as being black or red, but the scientific name is the same.
Other sites I've seen (which will remain nameless) don't differentiate, selling simply Volitan lions. I've also seen one site selling "Colored" Volitans.

A volitans lion is a volitans lion. They are the same species but some have different colors. Mostly they come in Black and Red but I have seen light brown colored ones. But they are the same species only different colors.

I expected as much but I wasn't sure. One other question, do volitans generally maintain their color as they age, or do the colors change?

Well, generally lions tend to stay the same color as they age. Although, I have seen a few in the past that has color fading. However, with a proper nutrional value throughout meals, they should keep their healthy colors throughout their lives. But with poor nutrition in their diet, it can harm the fish and it's color will gradually fade. It usually happens when leading up to death. But, like I always say, fish are always different than the other. Anything is possible and it is very possible that their color may dull as they age. But, if you mean, if they change from red to black, that won't happen.

The Red Lionfish is also often sold as P. volitans but is actually
Pterois lunulata. The Red Lionfish doen't have the antennae above the eyebrows
like this one does.

Hi all, I had to post that we got a volitan lionfish yesterday, and boy is he beautiful. They are so different in looks. I'm suprised everyone doesn't have one...Really neat fish! Later Lisa
