OK, I know that clowns act wacky and mine are no exception.
However, their new behavior has got me a little befuddled. :notsure:
My mated pair had produced several batches of eggs (got 13 juveniles total....not bad for first attempt) when my male jumped and died on the floor. Couldn't deal with a pregnant female I guess. Eggcrate is now the standard as I don't want to loose another one.
So, I got a new juvenile about 6 months ago and they instantly paired off. I also have moved them from my old 55 into a 125 display tank.
Note that my clowns have always ignored my RBTA for over 2 years. Lately, the female seems to hang out on a bunch of green mushrooms. Not really hosting, just laying there. Soft and low current I guess.
Now for the new behavior.
The last week, she has been digging in the sand around my green open brain coral. She is constantly around it, definately displaying hosting behavior. Even chasing other fish away from it (except for my Kole tang.....he goes where he wants).
Now, I had about 2 inches of sand that the brain was on, Half of it is now almost down to glass bottom and the brain has begun to slip into the trench she has dug.
I am thinking that she is preparing another nest site by clearing the sand away looking for rock. The thing is that there is only the tank bottom.
Finally for my question/idea
I am thinking of getting a ceramic tile (like I used last time) and instead of placing it against a rock, place it in the sand, under the brain coral.
I tried putting a small peice of flat, base rock at the bottom of the trench, but she has moved it out overnight. Don't know how as it probably weighs more than she does!
Anyone tried this before?
Think it will work?
Will it harm my brain coral being on a hard tile rather than sand?
I really want them to lay eggs on something that I can move to a hatch tank and get going raising the fry again, thus the tile idea.
