Want to add southdown - turn power filter off?

I'm switching from CC to southdown while there are still no fish in my new tank... have an aquaclear 300 running now... since there are no fish in there now, should I just disconnect the filter until the sand settles?

I ended up turning my sump off when i switched my crushed coral to southdown the turblance kept the sand from settling down. After turning the sump off the tank was clear the next morning. I changed mine over a period of about a week by changing smaller sections of the tank at a time. after leaving it on the first day and wondering why i had a lot of sand in the sump i shut everything down for the other 2 changes. Anyway I would thaink that the sand particles would be bad for the impellers of the pumps. Kind of like when you grind the boad propeller down after getting stuck on a sand bar. I leared this the hardway too at $300.00 for a propeller. So much for my navigational skills.

i recently switched as well, i turned off my filter only while adding the sand. By the next morning my tank was clear.

you guys all use power filters? like my aquaclear 300? Also, how many pounds of if will I needs for 4" in a standard 55 gal?
rob, home depot told me 2.97 / 50lb bag... how much did you pay?
from nj also!

a good way to add sand to an already filled tank with water in it is cut a slit in the middle of the bag then settle the bag to the bottom of the tank and then turn the bag over on the side that the slit is on and let the sand pour out....thats what i did for my tank and the tank cleared up in less than 10min..
