Watage/gallon ratio

Watts per gallon can't really be relied upon because of factors like tank depth, width and lots of other stuff. A better way is to figure out what corals you want and then ask people wo have had long term success with those corals what type of lighting they have.

Well what I want to get is brain coral, mushrooms, and sun coral. I know sun coral does not need super intesne lights but how about the other two?

I agree, depth is a big factor here. If your tank is 24 inches deep and you will be placing corals on the sandbed then metal hallides might be the choice here as VHO and PC lose there par value after about 12 inches or so.
