WATCHMEN, INNOVATIVE? or cheap D.C. knockoff of Marvel's XMEN?

the trailer i just saw on tv looked pretty cheesy. i mean the comedian? what superhero is called the comedian?! the riddler at least gives off an intellectual characteristic as a villian

Edit: Wiki article contains spoilers.
Watchmen is a lot deeper than your typical comic book. Much acclaimed, many mainstream awards, blah, blah, blah.
It has a nice hippie message, that's why Hollywood loves it. Its not going to make a great transition to the scream.
It'll make money, for sure, but I think a lot of people are going to be surprised if they kept to the original message of the book.

What is the hippy message?

Reb, not sure if you've read it or not, but its not so much the underlying message, but the underlying swipes at Nixon, Vietnam, the Comedian, and our nuclear research that give this a leftward lean to me.
BTW, just went back to note my OP link contains spoilers.

I agree on that gmann, the character development is going to be tough to do. There's only so much you can stuff into 110 minutes and still keep the audience entertained and the whole Watchmen plot/character levels are so heavy. I will definitely go see the movie though, if anything, it will be visually stunning. Zack Snyder is directing, the guy that did 300, so Watchmen should be pretty epic.
I don't think it's a cheap copy of Xmen. The original comic books themselves are very acclaimed, as mentioned. And the movie has such a storied past, who wouldn't what to see it finally made.

Don't you almost want it to suck, for that reason?
Hollywood wastes so much money, I'd love to see a $100 million 'Superhero' movie flop.
That said, its going to be stunning, visually. Just seeing the previews and knowing what scenes they are, its going to look great. The question is whether the viewing public is going to be okay with going to a 'Superhero' movie and getting a 25 year old story about the Cold War.

Oh well, what movie doesn't take that swipe.

You know what is funny about the whole nixon thing, is that LBJ was way worse a criminal. (you know that whole gulf of Tonkin fabrication) Just to get elected. But Nixon get vilified. And LBJ somehow remains unscathed. Fuel a war to get reelected or possibly spy on some political enemies. Which is worse?

No not at all. Why does it have to be hollywood "wastes" money?
They are one of the few avenues left that actually spends some coin, a good chunk of it domestically.
But no. We don't need a Superhero movie to gum up the works right now. We still have Iron Man 2, Thor, Captian America, and maybe the Green Lantern to go through before we will get the movie apocalypse that will be "The Avengers" movie, with all of the superheros...

I agree they spend a good amount of money domestically. However, that doesn't mean they're spending it efficiently. I don't want to get off track here though.

Don't forget at least one more trip to the Batman well. After all, the last one was the second-highest grossing movie of all time, and Hollywood likes nothing more than past success.
There's been a couple flops already, and the third X-Men was a travesty, and yet all those movies you listed have the green light.
After all, now that Marvel has its own studio, what are they going to do but pimp out their characters?

El Guapo nailed this in before in another movie thread. Everyone expects every movie now to be some all time mega hit. Which, actually, we did get that once in a decade movie this year, with the Dark Knight. But there were lots of good movies in 2008 that were well worth $7.50.$9.
Quantum Of Solace, Eagle Eye, Gran Turino, Benjamin Button, TDK, Burn After Reading, Tropic Thunder, WALLE, The Incredible Hulk, Kung Fu Panda, Iron Man, 21, Rambo 4, and Cloverfield.

umm, yeah, no, in that list, I thought 2 were great. Grand Turino, and Rambo 4 worth owning
1 was good Tropic Thunder
And the only one I didn't watch that I wanted to was Quantum of Solace, maybe cloverfield and Kung Fu Panda.
The rest either were lame or not even on my netflix.
But I'm easily bored, you know what was another good one? No country for old men. Although I hated it.

I specifically remember getting bored of that movie and starting to work on my tank, which at the time was right next to the tv.
I'd be going back and forth to the bathroom, hear shooting, and ask my wife who just got shot.
I think that pretty much gave me the gist of it.
I always put movies into 6 categories.
0. Never plan to see it.
- Most chick flicks and bad comedies fall here.
1. Stumble across it on TV and watch it.
- Obviously, a lot from categories 2-5 fall into here.
2. DVR from TV to watch later.
- A rarity, but more of these lately.
3. Rent it.
- Majority of movies I see fit here.
4. Go see it.
- I'm cheap, and hate spending $20 on a movie (have to take wife).
5. Go see it again
(Dark Knight is pretty much alone in this category).

Well, it was an odd movie. Kind of slow, I thought it was going to be two different kinds of movies. One a clint eastwood Good Bad and the Ugly, then I thought it was going to be a tarantino Pulp Fiction flick. Then at the very end. The last five minutes, you see what the movie is really about, realize it was Genius, then say friggen a that is a downer.

Looks totally cheesey. They got a batman wannabe, a Darkman wannabe, and a silver surfer wannabe lol. I hope it bombs just like that one movie that was in black and white...forgot what it was called.
