Water changes and top offs

When you add new salt or fresh water that changes the salintiy rather rapidly. I have been just dumping the new water in the tank What is the best way to add water to a tank?
My emerald crab died today after I topped off the tank with fresh water. I think I may have killed him as I have read that they are sensitive to salinity changes.
I have a 49 galllon tank and buy large jugs of RO water

How much water are you adding?? When you add water to a tank you need to pre mix the salt with the water otherwise it will kill the fish, especially when you are doing water changes.

WAIT WHAT? If your topping off, you use plain R/o If your doing a water change, you use saltwater. Whats your salinity at right now? :notsure:

You should be checking your salinity daily to every other day. This way you will notice when it is a little off and you won't have to add large top offs. Some people also draw a line on the back of their tank/sump/fuge so they can tell at a glance is some has evaporated. This is something you realy have to be on top of. Remember that only the water evaporates, so the more evaporation the higher the concentration of salt is in your tank.
