water changes

Water changes are necessary. You need to do changes to replenish trace elements in the water for your livestock. I do 10% weekly changes which for me is 5 gallons. Some people do 20% every 2 weeks. Some people do it monthly. You need a clean container like a 5 gallon bucket from home depot. Mix your salt and water at least 24 hours in advance to allow proper aeration. Make sure your salinity is the same in your newly mixed water as it is in the tank. Youll need a small pump like a mini jet to keep the water moving in the bucket. Depending on the temp of the water you may need a heater to keep the water the same temp as your tank.

I'm just going to add that besides replenishing trace elements, water changes also remove pollutants that build up.

If you have a spare room/garage or something. You can use a plastic garbage can. The idea here is to only use the upper 1/2 of the can for water changes if you use tap water. The bottom half should be dumped out. It is basically distilling the water to get the clean good water from the top. Or you could get bottled water (distilled) from the store and mix it with salt in the trash can. Good luck

Don't use tap water.
How often depends on your tank and your bioload. For a year I just had two stars, I did a water change about every three months...but I also have 100lbs lr.
Some people do some weekly, bi-monthly, or monthly. You'll have to find what's right for you tank.
if you have cc you'll need to clean it, they sell the tubes at walmart.
I mix the salt right in the gallon jugs, let it sit over night, then I add it, after I check the salinity. 5 gallons would be easier, but I don't have a place for that, plus, how the heck would I get the water from the 5 gallon jug to the tank?
refill water from walmart is .33 a gallon

I think 5% a week is the best amount for a water change. John Tullock says that anything more can be traumatic for sesitive marine organisms. Not saying that anything bad will happen if you do more than 5%, just giving you my opinion. h*

I've been doing 10% weekly, but then I've been battling hair algea, which I'm glad to say is pretty much gone. I will now switch to doing 5% weekly...can't seem to get myself to give up this task entirely, I rather enjoy it!!
