I do a 10% water change every week. I am wondering if I should use a vacuum-siphon in the sand or if i shouldn't because it will disturb beneficial bacteria colonies. thanks!

It's a good question. I am wondering the same thing. I like to vacuum because I see lots of "muddy, dusty" looking stuff coming out, and it feels good to clean that stuff up... But perhaps we should not vacuum every single time, eh?

I have the same question. What do the rest of you do? Do you recommend cleaning the detrice from the live sand or is this really 'harmful' to the bacteria colonies?? I'm like wingzfan; makes me feel good to see all that cloudy muck travel into the bucket.

There is NOTHING WRONG with lightly syphoning the very top of your live sand to get any of the top laying detrius. You will not disturb your sandbed, be careful with Nassarius snails and hermit, but they should be able to dig themselves out.

Agree with MiaHeat - it is IMO a good idea to lightly vacuum the sand bed surface. The obvious reason being the overall appearance of the scape - secondly is that the vast majority of tanks do not have adequate anaerobic bacteria and therefore this waste will simply be converted into nitrates and require more water changes.
