water circulation question

I have a 56 gallon colum tank, my live rock is situated along the back glass and some on the sides just not as tall. where should I place my powerheads for maximum affect. also I want to buy a couple new powerheads which would be the best? what I have is working, just a couple dead spots. and I really want that gentle flowing back and forth motion. but any where I place the corals it's either turbulent or no movement. I've tried moving the powerheads but just can't figure it out. any advice?

Hi,
Without a wave maker you won't get a back and forth motion. I also have a 56g tall tank. You will always have spots that are very turbulant and others with very slow current. That's okay as long as you don't have any dead spots. Most folks have trouble with the bow-fronts, but the square and rectangle tanks are pretty easy.
I found the best place for my 2 power heads is against the back wall facing forward, angled a little down on one, and a little up on the other. The flow hits the front of the tank, and bounces back to keep the rocks clear of debris. I like the Koralia or a type of that brand, instead of a jet stream made by the maxi-jets. The MP10 and MP20 I have read what folks talk about on the site, are very nice but expensive. I don't have any personal experience with them. The magnet or the really strong clip type suction cup, are what you want to hold the PH in place, so look for those types....anything with those 3 little suction cups on PH's like maxi-jets are useless, so stay away from getting them. The vibration of the PH makes those come loose from the glass, and not only does it create a sand storm, it ruins the PH by getting grit inside the little motor.
Hope that helps.
