180 gallon tank, 2 overflows at 600 gph each. one overflow goes to refugium, the other goes to the skimmer chamber and they meet together at the sump and back up to the tank.
the fuge is about 25 gallons. has a 65 watt shop light that is now running at 24 hours a day (for most of the past year, was running at 12 hours a day). the fuge has a deep sandbed and is full of live rock.
now the problem I have is that I cannot get algae to grow in the fuge, despite there being lighting in the fuge and some phosphates in the tank. I bought a bundle of cheato that was bigger than a football and after 6 months, it's down to the size of a baseball.
what I'm wondering, is the 600 gph too much for the macroalgae to grow? I mean, the water is shooting pretty hard into the fuge and the flow seems to be pretty heavy. I have ball valves on the pipes going into and out of the fuge/skimmer chambers, so I can adjust the flow. just wondering if you think this will correct the problem with algae not growing. btw, there is plenty of coralline and film algae growing on the walls of the fuge, just no macroalgae.
