Water Level In Nano-Cube?

Am I missing something or what? In my 12 gallon nano DX my second and third chambers aren't dividing the water between the baffles. The water just runs over top of the baffle and the water is continous. Is this because of a weak pump or some other error I'm not thinking of? I was under the impression that the water level in the third chamber would be less than the water level in the second chamber. There really isn't a difference in the water level between the tank area and third chamber. Is this normal or what???

Okay, maybe I should ask this question, what does everyone else's chamber area look/do in their nano cube?? Does your second chamber flow through the "cuttout" into the third chamber where the pump is located or does it do like mine and go right over top of the baffle???

My 12 gallon has been running for a year and I have had olny one problem. All my areas seem to have about the same water level and flow is good. I did notice once when I had an algae problem that the two sponges were so full of gunk that they weere not letting the water flow to the center and pump area baffles. I rinsed them off and it filled up right away. Other then that i have had no over the top of the baffle water flow.

Lisa, when you say no over the top baffle flow, do you mean from baffle to baffle or from baffle to tank. Mine flows over baffle to baffle between chambers two and three. I have no filter media in at this time and it is still going over the baffle between two and three. I was just think that there was supposed to be like a waterfall effect when the water flows into chamber three. Is this correct?? Thanks

The more water you have in your cube the higher it will be in the rear chambers. If you want less water in the rear chambers remove some water. If that doesn't work you may want to consider a surface skimmer or partcially block the intake grate. This forces the water in the display to remain constant and makes the rear chambers easier to adjust.

thats interesting. because my water level my 24 is pretty high. but in the back, my 1st chamber the water level is pretty high, then the 2nd it drops really low like about half the tank high and the third chamber its little bit lower than half. how do i adjust that? could it be that my filter cotton thing is blocking the way?

Couple things...
1st, do you have some sort of surface skimmer? And 2nd, what size Powerhead do you have?

Bob, I think I'm going to upgrade to either a Maxijet 900 or 1200 pump. I also want to get one of the surface skimmers that you make. I think that might also help the problem. Now what about filtration. I have talked to a couple of lfs' and they have said that even Live Rock Rubble is a breeding ground for nitrates, most notably the lfs in Lansing, Mi said this. I figure because you to are also from Michigan you would know of this place. Are you still making the surface skimmers? Thanks.

There can a be a lot of junk that settles in the rubble if you don't clean it. Two schools of thought, 1...put the LR in a filter bag so when you do water changes you can easily get rid of detrious (I never spell that right) by rinsing off the LR. And 2...siphon the debris out when you vaccuum during a water change. I do the 2nd, only because I don't know if there would be any adverse effects from putting LR in a filter bag??? Also an increase in flow will help move the debris out as well. I would go with the 1200. The only other filtration I use is Chemi-pure and Phosban.
I am still making my skimmers. If you want one I can send you a paypal invoice.
Thanks,
Bob

No i do not have a surface skimmer. i am planning on making one but im having a hard time finding a dremel. and i have the stock powerhead in the 24cube. i am planning on changing it with a maxijet 900 and those hydor flow things but i was afraid that the powerhead might be too strong and the water level in the chambers would go down quick.

I have a 24NC with a maxijet1200 and my surface skimmer. Even with the flow restricted by the skimmer I don't have a problem with the water level in the rear chambers. I do, however need to top off more often, because all the evap takes place in the rear of the cube. As long as I maintain it, the back chambers stay where they should.
