water level in wet dry sump? Help?

Does it matter if water level in sump of wet dry is a couple inches above bottom of bio balls. SOmeone told me it should be under the balls completely. There is probably a total of 10 inches of balls and first two at bottom are in water. As you all probably know gettin it adjusted correctly is tough. This is where its wanting to run right now. ?>? Or do I wanna do something to lower it back down under the balls which would then put the filter pad around the mag 9.5 out of the water a half inch. Anyone? Thanks in advance>

i use to have it half way at the bio balls..works well for me..less noise cuz the water is hitting the bioballs not the top of the water...i would raise the water level so the pump is fully submerged in the water..ur pump has a bigger change of running dry if its already sticking out half an inch of the water.....

PS I have an overflow box... does that matter when determining all this?

Nah you're good.
If you are running that close to the pump intake, having the level that low would be worse than conceding some of your bio media to being submerged. I have a freshwater planted tank with a wet/dry on it that I routinely submerge as much as half the media, and I've never seen an adverse effect.

It makes no difference where you run the level of water in your wet/dry, as long as it is low enough so that it does not overflow when the power goes out. It's not a problem at all if some of the bio balls are submersed in water.

Strange... I could have sworn I was the first one to respond to the OP, and this morning when I checked the thread again I could have sworn Lion and I were the only ones who had... am I going crazy?

I had it posed in fish discussion and I believe beth moved it for me. Only the one response over there and it was prior to yours here. She combined them..... Ok so another question now that i know it's ok to fill it up halfway up the balls. My water is leaking at least 3/4 of an inch every 24 hrs in this sump and I do believe it's a 30 gallon sump. Is that normal for this much to evaporate or is it going elsewhere? weird >?> My tank never lost this much water before. Is it normal from running an overflow box and a sump? > Hmmmph

dangit, you beat me to the planted tank. I have a 55g that I am converting to a planted.
on to the OPs question, when I was running my bio-balls I ran them partly submerged as if I didnt then the pump would sometimes pull air and put micro-bubbles into the DT.
