I would say about mid cycle. what are the trates?? not sure what normal is for alk. I wouldn't worry about testing for anything but ammonia, trites and trates during the cycle. after they reach 0 let them get stable for about a week and if they are still 0 and your slainity, ph, and temp is ok then it is fish time.
how long has your tank been set up?

Tank has already finished cylcling. It has been up since Oct. 2002. I did however change from DD to DSB two weeks ago. Would that cause a mini cycle?

after throughing a number of $ because of dead fish because of not cycleing my first freshwater tank, the longer it cycles, the better.. I threw a very unhardy fish that I had purchased that same day into a 30 gallon tank, that is when I was done filling it up with water... PLus the fish waited in a 2 hour drive home..... I was amazed when it did not die after puting it in... Then I went to walmart and bought 6 different fish, brought them home, and watched my luck run out.....
