I am new to the hobby and would like to start keeping a fish and reef tank. Could someone please tell me what I should check for in my water and how often. Also, I would like to know what i need to add to my water that isn't there now.
Thanks

First if you haven't read any books, I recommend The New Marine Aquarium, and The Conscientious Marine Aquarist.
Second, I recommend using RO/DI water as topoff water (not saltwater you add to your tank for evaporation) and as a base for your saltwater mix. If you are only planning on a FOWLR (fish only with live rock, no corals) then you do not need to add anything to your tank, water changes should suffice.
As far as testing, you will need tests for Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrate, pH, Alk, and I recommend one for Phosphates also. These will be needed as soon as you start cycling your tank. As your tank is cycling you will test every day to every other day, as you tank matures every week is okay.
