I recently purchased a power compact 196 watt lighting systmem for my 40 gallon tank and there is red slime algae and bubbles collecting all over my live rock. There has also been an excessive amount of green dust algae collecting on the glass and the subtrate. Anyone know what typically causes this. I just did a 20 percent water change. Any suggestions would be greatly apreciated.

Do you test your water. What are the results. Most algae blooms can be traced to high phosphates and or high nitrates...these can be caused by overfeeding, using tap water as a source, or poor filtration. It may be a response to the increase in light intensity. Many algae blooms will run their course over time. Post your water chem and get more help.

You probably had excessive nutrients in the system..and coupled with the more intense lighting...created the algea bloom.
Do your water change again in a couple days...and reduce your light on period...then gradually increase the on period until you are at the number of hours you intend to run it.
