Water Softeners and RO/DI's

So I just moved into a new house. And it has a water softener system for the whole house. Now it is great for soap. But It tastes like crap. So if I place an RO-DI system behind the water softener what is it going to do to the RO-DI system? Since it is dumping salt into the water is that going to expend my ro filters sooner? I dunno just how is it going to work?

I have a soft coral die off that I think is a result of having my Kinetico RO system fed from my soft water source. I am going to move the RO off the soft water after Xmas to see if this is the problem. Some of my soft corals are 20 years old and this is the only change I have made. If anyone has an idea or has experienced this please let me know.
