Water storage

This my sound like a silly question or just totally stupid. With that in mind I'm brand new to the hobby and just have a quick question about storing water used for water changes. Currently I'm using a 35gal plastic trash can to store my RO/DI water. Question is, will it be ok to store it for extended periods of time with no water movement in it or do I need to keep a powerhead in it? Any advice will be appreciated.

I keep my ro/di water in a 35gal trash can without water circulation but I go through about that much water in a week. I also keep a 20gal with salt water, but I have a heater and a powerhead in it I have stored this water for 2-3 weeks. I have heard some people talk about trash cans not being the best thing to keep water in because they are not made out of material that was made to hold water (and they may leach something into the water) but I have not heard anything concrete.
