Water Temp

What is the right temp range? My lFS says 78, but posts I've read here say 80-82. My tank starts the day at79.5 and with the metal halides on rises to 81.5 over 8hrs. Is this OK?

78 is the temp i use. I think it is in the range of acceptable temps. You may find you have better results with a different one, though.

It shouldnt be to bad since the ocean warms and cools from night and day. You could get some fans to keep the water cooler during the day when the lights are on but that is it. Lowering the temp or getting a chiller would just have a lower temp at the start and alittle higher "but lower than what you started with" after 8 hrs.

You can theoretically have a temperature of anywhere from 75-84. However, the more important issue is stability. You tank temp should not fluctuate more than four degrees in 24 hours. A temp of about 80 is ideal for most community tanks, and a fluctuation of 2 degrees or less is best.
