Guess I'll start because I wondered the same thing. API is ok for the basic stuff. My trates were not measured accurately. Their pH test is ok, it stays accurate with my digital pH tester. I am going to get a Salifert trate kit to ensure accurate test.
As another member said on here, when it comes to the test kits, you WILL get what you pay for!

IMO, if you want accuracy go with Salifert. If you just want a general idea of your tank is doing, i'd go API. Salifert is bit more expensive, but I was extremely happy with them after going through several different brands of test kits.
