Water too warm....

hi,i am having a problem with my water staying too warm..The themometer is is on 76 but my water stays between 84 and 86.The heater doesnt come on so why would water stay so warm?Am I running lights to many hours a day?Usually are on from 8am until about 9.30pm..Any suggestions on how to cool water down gradually? Thanks

Lots of things contribute to heat in a tank... a few:
Lights
Pumps
Broken heaters
Ambient room temp
Lack of surface agitation
many many more....

u could prop open the top a bit and use a fan to cool it off that is usually good for about2-4 degrees i do 12hrs blue lights 10 hours whites, also i have my lights start to come on at 4 and off around 2 am since it is usually cooler at night then day

what exactly is surface agitation and how do you get it "good?"

Surface agitation is disturbance of the surface of the water. Powerheads or power filters are the most common way to get surface agitation.

I forgot to mention that i have 4 power heads aslo..

Many experts are now providing that between 80-84 degrees is proper reef temperatures, so running at 84-86, you should be able to make only minor adjustments to bring it down to an acceptable temp.
