I need one because I lose 2-4 gallons a day and the level of water lowers in the sump making the skimmer inaffective. Who has ones and can anyone recommend a certain one ? I see them ranging from $ 60 to $ 200.

This is what i have and it works great. It has 3 safeties to prevent sump overflow.
Under $100
GAP Level-Loc is a plug and play auto top off that easy to install and dependable. It fits on most aquarium type sumps and is held in place by two nylon thumb screws. The height is adjustable as well as the direction and angle of the float making it very adaptable.
Level-Loc uses a polypropelyne float valve to maintain water level with a float switch/solenoid combination as a safety backup. In addition, the solenoid can be plugged into a timer to limit the hours in a day the auto top off is running. This gives added safety as well as improves the longevity of your RO membrane (when hooked directly to an RO unit).
The solenoid is 12V, 5W which is safe around water and energy efficient.

I've got 2 different ones... Tunze Osmolator 3155 and ATO Auto Top-off. The latter one is under $100 and easier to install.

To help prevent sump overflows I would suggest purchasing an electronic (not mechanical) timer and set it to allow the pump to work, if needed for 1 minute 2x daily. This has saved me hours of water clean up twice in the last year.

I am just curious about a few things is your skimmer in your sump? You state you have a 35 gallon sump and you are loosing two gallons a day unless your sump is very shallow you should not be getting to a level with a two gallon loss that causes your skimmer not to work to its full capacity also four gallons a day of evaporation is on the high side are you checking for leaks

maybe its just from high powered lights. he could have metal halide those make water evaporate pretty fast.

I definately don't have any leaks. when I started using the three metal halides and four 96 watt accents my evaporation went up. this does lower the water level in the sump enough to effect the performance.

This is what i have it's the best!!!

Auto Top Off Controller
* Automatically refills evaporated aquarium water
* Maintains aquarium and sump water level to prevent pump damage
* Save time and effort by automating aquarium top-offs
Automatically refill your sump or aquarium without lifting heavy buckets or spilling water. Floating sensors monitor water level and activate pump when water level drops due to evaporation. Helps maintain stable salinity/specific gravity and optimum water level to prevent pump from running dry. Features LED panel, Audible Signal alert and linkable brackets for installation. Requires water pump, sold separately.
Pump Safety Protection: The A.T.O. Controller automatically stops power to your top off pump in the event that your reservoir is low on water. The safety feature prevents pumps from running dry and failing.
