i just asked almost the same question. I am pretty new to this saltwater tank hobby. Tap water is not really good for your tank. I was told to use RO water. however, I filled my tank with tap water and then added a dechlorinator. My tank is pretty healthy. Now when I add water it is only RO water. Different people have different answers to this question. I think the way tht I did it was alright for me. However tap water is not good for your tank. If I were you I would use RO water. If I could do it over again I would use Ro water.

Before you'd want to consider using your water, you'd want to run a complete test on it. Even if it tests alright, and some well water can be as good as city water. You'd still be better off using ro water. Plus, atleast than you'd "know" what you're putting in your tank. You should be able to pick up ro water for really cheap at lfs's or even supermarkets. You can wait, or hold off indefinately on ever purchasing your own ro unit.

unpurified well water can have even more stuff in it than tap water. my well has a very high TDS which is a bad thing along with nitrates phoisphates and a lot of trace metals. all of which are bad in a SW tank. the difference in taste on a well to RO water is enough for me yo always have one even if god forbid I dont have a tank I will still have an RO for drinking water. a major difference in the 2. so IMO its a good thing to have even if you dont have a tank.
