wpg is no longer a usefull way to determine light penetration. look for PAR ratings thats the best way to know if a light is right for what you want to grow

while this may be true...most people do not have par meters and cannot tell when their par ratings fall...

Might be easier to say what kind of tank you have and what kind of lights you are thinking about putting on :)
You can have 2 - 250 watt metal halides in a 90 gallon tank as you have over 5 watts per gallon... but if you have an sps up top under a light... you have REALLY intense light there... but if you have something on the bottom in a back corner your lighting is SIGNIFCANTLY less.
PAR rating has more to do with available light in an area and positioning your coral in accordance with it.
