Would 10 wpg be ok for carpets. I debating between two 250 mh or 2 400 mh for my lighting upgrade. I am a little concerned with overheating with the 400's

Watts per gallon is a bad measurement for light. Basically you want enough PAR to sustain your carpet. PAR decreases as you go further from the water's surface, as such you will want to make sure he has room to get to the right spot in the aquarium (most likely the top). What size is your tank? How far from the water are you planning to put the bulbs?
Also another option might be 2x250w double ended MH bulbs, though the bulbs are more expensive I hear they output the intensity of single ended 400w mongul sockets, though I can't confirm. (They draw less power and therefore less heat is produced)
