Wattage - how much is enough?

So here is the deal: 55 gal standard tank
Going with CSL retro lights
LT goal is to keep leather corals, clams, xenia, maybe even a Small polyp or large... depending.
Basically I dont mind cutting off the top of the hardest most light needy corals, but I want to make sure I have room to explore.
Need to determine my wattage:
I have heard 3-4W/gal; 7 - 10W/Gal; I read that someone says they have 4.8
What should I aim for?
BTW - does anyone know that if I bought 65W retro from CSL, could I just change the bulbs to 96W later if I needed it, or is it more difficult than that?
Thx

I spoke to CSL on your last BTW question.
They told me I could not use the 96watt bulbs with the 65watt ballasts.
There are some excellent lighting posts in the archives - I'd suggest reading them as well, amy help you with your decisions.
Lots of good lighting info ;)
