watts per gallon?

how do you base the wattage per gallon ? for corals? i know there are different corals that require more than others but what is the best way to do this?

That rule is obsolete as it just isn't accurate anymore. There is a big difference between 96w of PC and 96w of T5.
What you have to do is take into account what you want to keep, and how deep your tank is.

i agree. and to even confuse you more, some bulbs put out more useable light, or "PAR" than others. one of my 250 watt ballasts went bad so i had to send it in for warranty.
i replaced it temporarily with a 400 watt ballast and bulb, which is actually less powerful, according to my corals.

what kind of corals are you planning on keeping here?
How deep is the tank?
what would be considered a buy on a budget, do you have an amount you are looking to stay under?

Well I would look into T-5 lighting, as they stay much cooler and should be able to put out enough light for you to house anything in your tank. The price range you specify is possible but it all depends on the length of the tank, as the longer units are more expensive. You can get a 48" T-5 light around me (FL) for about $350 so I assume that because the tank is shorter than 48" you should be fine.

the nova extreme pro is perfect for this tank.... you would be able to keep anything with that lamp as long as the coral is properly placed, going rate is approx $289. for a little more you could go with the tek fixture.
