My friend just set up his first saltwater tank, a 37gal eclipse. He is one of those who likes to go all out. I tried to tell him that he can't add corals because of the poor lighting and no place to fit a skimmer without cutting the hood. He is looking into wave makers and started asking me questions about them to which I have no answer. So, What is thier purpos, are they necessary, which fish like them, are they worth the 100 bucks?

Playtime, we have a Red Sea Wavemaker, I asked awhile ago about them also, you could do a search, I think I got a lot a great responses. Our fish seemed to love it, we still have it in our reef, I don't know if I wanted to move it to our F/O, we paid close to $179.00 for ours with 4 powerheads. I have seen something new we might try...It is a power bar that you plug all of your powerheads into and it has a timer on it, they say it does the samething as a wavemaker. I'm thinking about ordering one and trying it out. Our fish loved the wavemaker, I used to say "oh look Niger is doing his exercising", he would swim in the current. Oh yeah, the power bar runs in price of about $55.00. If it works the same it would be well worth the money...
Hope this helps some...Later Lisa
