We need a reef chemistry forum

There are so many chemistry questions that are mixed throughout the forums. I feel like it would benefit new hobbyists by having all of that information in one place and be able to ask questions in that specific forum. Or at least let us have a subforum in thr reef tanks forum.
Anyone share my thoughts??

I agree, it's very difficult to figure out how to balance PH, Calcium and Alkalinity and how they are related. PH drops and folks start dumping in buffer. A place ot find that info and discussion would be very helpful to us all, not just the beginners.

Awesome. Thanks Flower. I appreciate you chiming in on the thread.
Anyone else?

two days ago I took several samples from my tank. I gathered samples from the following....
1) the skimmer
2) under the media tray, there was some biofilm that had collected there
3) tank water from the water column
4) the media filter itself
5) and the bacteria or waist in the substrate.
I then did a smear on a couple of petrie dishes and labeled them accordingly. I then put some of the samples taken and have them in tubes to take to the lab.
The petrie dishes grew bacteria on the first and second day with one type of bacteria over taking the other samples. Here I see two different layers of growth. In the tubes a collection of bacteria is sittling at the bottom of the test tube.
I also smered some phytoplankton to and the bacteria quickly over took that too as a food source. These dishes really stink too.... WOW
currently in thr fridge in the garage.
I want to see different types of bacteria, and according to my samples, I have atleast +++ different colonies.
I plan on taking some macro algea in too. According to some microbiologsits, H.A. and certain macro's let out toxins and they want to see if these toxins xan aide in killing cancer cells in people without harming the host. So, my weeks ahead are going to ne very filled.
Thought ya'll would be interested.

Kiefers. Very cool. I'm interested in the results and tagging along. Which sample produced the most bacteria?

so far..... believe it or not, the bio-film from underneath the mechanical media tray. It looks as if it took over the petri dish. Nitrifying bacterium more than likely. This is why I also collected in the tubes.
I am taking the cultures to the lab on Monday where I will do a few smear stains and if needed an acid fast stain. I wish we had the microscopes with cameras or the big flat screens like they do in CSI. Lol....

I did find a digital microscope with 400X magnification, would that be enough to see what you need? The price on the student one was very reasonable at $349.00, I have looked at it real hard a few times. It will show on your computer as large as your screen, big as life. CSI in no time.

Thank you for the link! I saved it for future references.
I am taking the samples to my lab on Monday. I plan to isolate a few colonies and see what and how many different types of critters I get.
