weird cotton

i have some live rock in my tank, about 20 lbs in a 55gal. my tanks been up and running for about 9 months i guess. on my rocks, im noticing some cotton looking stuff growing on my rocks. they come in little patches in different locations. they all seem to have tiny holes going through them also. these patches are appearing randomly throughout the tank. there are also 2 distinct patches that are alittle bigger than the others. these 2 are close together and they both have a circle of hair growing from it. the hairs are not moving though. this has been for about a 3 weeks now. anyone know whats going on???

It sort of sounds like a sponge to me...without a pic it's hard to tell.

i wish i had a digital camera. do sponges reproduce and spread that rapidly?? i say theres about 12 spots. by the way, they are white and like 3/4 of a cm diameter

Some will...I have a dark blue encrusting sponge that is all over my tank in smaller spots

without a pic i cant give you a definate answer but it sounds like the same type of sponge i have in my tank. if i can find a pic ill post it. sponges are a sign of good water quality.
