Well it happened. I officially became impacted by corporate america today.

It may not be as bad as it first sounds as some jobs are being eliminated while other new positions are being created. I have been a very high performer for the past 5 years and a very good track record prior to that so maybe that will be enough. A few prayers and good wishes are always welcome. I should know in a couple of weeks what is in store for me. Will update when I know.

Here are my prayers and good wishes, going your way...I really hate that hang in air feeling not knowing whats next, just waiting, in a couple of weeks I would be ready for a straight jacket.. It might be good to at least put out some feelers and see if you can find something else, just in case....so you have a jump start.

Thanks yall, yeah I am going to look but if it goes south then I think they will make me work until Dec 31 with a severance package to start after that. I really think I will be OK. Not to toot my own horn but I do a pretty good job. We will see. Thanks again for the support. It means a lot. If it all goes south I may sell some cheap corals for some really high prices. LOL

I feel for ya. We're going through the same thing...except that we know the outcome. lol We're hunkering down for a very rough 2011.
I'll add you to our prayers.

Dont know the law in alabama but here in NY, if you take severance then you cannot collect unemployment. I learned that the hard way one time when I was unemployed for almost 6 months. Right now, I am on month 5 of unemployment and the state is bragging about the unemployment rate of 8.5%. Then again, due to laws and whatnot, that is only the people able to collect unemployment. I have one month to find a job with still getting unemployment. After that month is up, we will be completely reliant on my wife's business. While I know she will do just fine, is the damn grooming van I am worried about. I seriously doubt it will make it through winter.
It sounds like your in sales, am I right? There are always sales positions available out there.

A good salesman can always find a job of some kind. Might not make any money but you can find a job LOL! If you make it to the end of the year that gives you a couple months to get resumes out there so at least thats something in your favor.
I seriously think we are through the worst of this crap and a lot of the downsizing you are seeing now is companies coming to the realization that going forward lean and mean is the way to go because a lot of their competition has gone that route. The company my wife works for has had a salary "freeze" on for the last two and a half years. They have cut numerous positions through attrition but at the same time they have bough somewhere north of 30 small companies and my wife has received better than 20K in bonuses and about a 13% increase in pay. In short they are being smart with their money picking up bargains and keeping the good employees happy while making the dead weight be content just to have a job. Hopefully you performance will be rewarded as well.

Sounds a lot like the company my wife works for Reef, they are actually adding about 30 positions in her department over the next year and since she survived the lean times and cuts by being a awesome employee her future is looking good and she just got a nice promotion. I hope you are right about the worst being over, I am not so sure though about my rural county though, it nearly died when the timber industry went away in the 70's and early 80's and was on life support, now I think it is basically dead as far as a the economy goes and is destined to be a bedroom county for the other counties it is near. I can't really see a lot of jobs that are anything but service related anytime in the future. Nice place to live, but a terrible place to start a business or find a good paying job.

I'd love to live in Oregon but couldn't afford it. Very cool places there.
Oregon has been tough since the tree huggers shot down timber and then you have the trust fund babies coming in and building like crazy driving up taxes. Some friends of the family moved to Sandy back around 1970. They finally had to sell their rural property bout 7 years ago because the taxes had went up so much from people developing the surrounding farm lands. My step day moved there around the same time and was working in the timber industry right as they started killing it. Right around the time as the Arab oil embargo as I remember. Back in the late 90's I was talking to a woman who was getting ready to move to Portland area where her 3 daughter lived. She said that 2 of them had houses in the area and the value of their home had better than doubled in less than 5 years. She was looking like 90 miles from Portland to be able to afford a place.

Thanks again everybody. Yes I am in sales and yes I could probably land a job somewhere. Problem with me is what my daddy taught me isnt what corp America wants anymore. That is that I would give this company the better part of my life and perform doing it. It seems that the longer you are at a job now the less appealing you are. I dont think that is always true. If you can move with the pace of the business and change then I wonder why it makes a difference of how long you are there? I find more and more "job hoppers" and that seems to be the trend. 5 yrs here 5 yrs there, both parties take from one another. I dont really want to be part of that. May end up having to just do that but who knows.
2 Things I am sure of at this time.
1) I aint gonna get out of this world alive.
2) There aint room in the casket for all the stuff I have.

Man you said it all, I had the pleasure of working for a old fashioned business man for many years, he was tough but fair and did not lay people off just because his own bottom line was looking bad but instead had faith in his company and his employee's. Full health coverage, a big Christmas bonus and profit sharing in addition to a decent wage where never thought of as anything but the cost of doing business and it paid off in employee loyalty and putting out superior work. I think those days are gone forever now.
My neighbor was layed off after 25 years because his company was not as profitable as it had been, then a visit to the owners facebook page showed him flying himself and his friends down to Vegas on a private jet. Am I socialist because I think this kind of crap really sucks? Who would not feel like crap after being treated like that?

DEPENDS...was he using company money, or his own

you know owners of companies get paychecks too, and some actually (I SAY SOME) use their own personal money for stuff

I think a lot of the problem right now is that a lot of companies can higher 2 new people for what they are paying on person that has been there a long time. They can get 2 people doing the same job as that one person for the same amount of money or even less sometimes. Then you have to throw in there the benefit package also. If they higher a new person there is usually a waiting period, could be 6 months or even sometimes a year before you can get the benefit package. I think it really sucks that some companies do this, but they just try to find a cheaper way of getting labor to do the job. I am not saying this is right, because its not.. I think it all goes back to the government and their spending. I live in NY and it is one of the states with the highest budget deficit in the country there are so many companies that used to be here in NY, but slowly but surly they are moving to other states where the taxes are lower, and where the can afford to survive.
Just hang in there, My thoughts and prayers are with you that everything works out for you. Good luck to you!!!!

I don't know the answer to that meowser, I do know the man that I worked for would never have been firing employees because money was tight and then jetted off to Vegas in a private plane.
I know people can do whatever they want with THIER money, but I think it takes a special kind of "person" to do something like that. The best thing is my neighbor is a veteran who to this day suffers the effects of being blown-up by a mortar in Vietnam and spent two years in a VA hospital his injuries where so bad. Like I said I am expecting to be called a socialist anytime now.

My old man works in the Ford testing labs. He feels much safer about his job right now than he has for quite a few years.
Mike, good luck...been there and done it...I trust that you'll figure out a solution no matter what happens.
