my wife and I were in Charleston for a couple days, so we decided to go to the aquarium, because we've heard nothing but rave reviews.
boy, all I can say is what a complete and utter disappointment.
they have an impressive 380,000 gallon aquarium that spans 2 stories, and it's jammed packed with common fish that you'd catch on a fishing trip....squirrels, soldiers, sargent majors. an angel or tang here and there.
there freshwater aquariums are just about as unimpressive.
the only thing that really made me raise an eyebrow was a porcupine puffer that was close to 2 feet long. I didn't realize they got that big.
other than the puffer, the poison dart frogs were the only things that interested me.
I mean, if clowns, damsels, and yellow tangs are the most popular saltwater fish, don't you think they'd have a few?
probably the most popular aquarium fish in the world are the Lake Malawi Cichlids. wouldn't you think they'd have at least a small Malawi display?
not one living coral in the entire building.
wow. I've never heard much rave reviews about the Ripley's Aquarium in Myrtle Beach, but it is 10 times better than the one in Charleston. at least Ripley's has a few reef fish, corals, and a nice conveyor belt that carries you through a tunnel under the shark aquarium.
I appreciate the work that aquarium volunteers and biologists do, but the "Aquarium of South Carolina" was a let down.
