Well Lionfish, I can't speak for everyone, but I, too, was somewhat nervous starting my tank (which has been up and running for several months). For me, it's the thought that, if something goes wrong anywhere along the way, a living creature could suffer....or worse. That's a big responsibility, and one that I, personally, do not take lightly.
That said, I have found the whole process to be very rewarding, and a real learning experience. I'm sure you will find it to be the same.
Good luck!

I've kept tanks of all sorts for quite awhile, but just started my first reef back in November. I can honestly say that there are many tanks I am jealous of.

When I started, I didn't worry about a thing... Because I knew NOTHING. It was when I started learning things, that I got nervous. When I FIRST started, my lfs DID tell me to cycle, but that was it!! Clean the filter about every 6 months, no need for any test kits, put in what-ever fish you want... but only 4 at a time, you have a 90 gal?, you can put in WAY more fish than you have now, no prob!! So as I learned, I got scared...
I'm still waiting to be the victom of the unexplained fish death.
I don't know WHAT I'll do!!:scared:

Jealous, scared and constantly second guessing myself, this last weekend was the first time I went out of town for more than 24 hours and I was seriously considered setting up a live web cam feed so I could check up on my tank from my friends house. :nervous: :D

I used to freak out and try to fix stuff to fast which just made another thing get messed up. Now I just let stuff take it's course for a week or so before I even think about changing something and most times the tank fixes itself. Stuff like Calcium and Ph do not need to be fixed in one day. My calcium was about 300 for a couple months while I was gone. When I got back everything looked great so I just upped my dosing every week and in a month or so it was back up to 400 and everything looked the same. More damage is done when people try to fix stuff right then rather then gradually improving the situation slowly. Even if the remedy takes a while, things are still improving which is a good thing. Now granted if your PH is 7.4 and you fish are swimming upside down then you probably want to fix it quickly but 99% of problems are better fixed gradually.
One reason why I have such a simple set up is so that less things can go wrong ( no sumps or reactors or automated gadgets )
