Wet/dry conversion

I took the bioballs and put sand and rock in its place. Now the question I have is there a good way to stop the "Driping" or overflow water from stiring up the sand? I included a Paint pic to show ya what I am talking about.

You can cut a piece of foam and place it on the sand and it may help... To be honest, I am having a hard time trying to decipher the drawing.

Thank but I think im going a different way and make a Fuge instead of trying to convert one.
