Ok I am just getting ready to set up my reef tank monday. I know it will have to cycle, but I would like to know what additves do you use. I am going to start out with some mushrooms.

2x65 is not enough for a 55. Consider 4x65,you will be able to keep pretty much all but SPS and clams. 10% water change every 2 weeks will keep trace elements correct. For calc.,either drip Kalk. or use(as I do) Kent CB,part A and B. Depending on what you have in the reef, there are food suppliments as well. Please complete the cycle before you add any living thing to the tank. Read, read, read, and go slow,it will be worth it. Good Luck.

Kent's Liquid Calcium daily, Kent ProBuffer daily, Kent's Essential Elements weekly, monthly water change.

kent: liquid calcium, iodine, strontium, micro-vert, superbuffer-dKH, and garlic xtreme.
two little fishies: marine snow
mark weiss: coral vital, spectra vital.
mushrooms go from dime sized to half dollar sized in about a week (at which point i split em to dime size again) and i am getting on a rock that is about 6 inches by 10 inches maybe 1 to 1 1/2 square inches of coraline coverage per week.
before i dosed iodine, micro-vert, and coral-vital, these rates were less than half of what im seeing now.
all i gotta do is figure out how to get the green and purple ricordia hitchhiker i found to grow (still about 3/8 of an inch across, mouth too small to direct feed).
your shopping list will depend entirely on what you hope to keep. you can probably get away without iodine, magnesium, and strontium if you do not keep a lot of softies, you can just keep levels up through more regular water changes, or throuh one of the all-in-one additives that doses small ammounts of all three.
be aware, if you are going to start using additives, make sure you do not buy a single bottle unless you also are willing to purchase a test kit to go along with it. many of the chemicals are easy to overdose. even if you know your level, as things grow and are removed, the intake needs of the things in your tank can really change dramatically.
