What am I doing wrong with my Q-Tank?

I just dont get it. I think I am missing something about Q-tanks.
I took 10 gals of water from my display, took my filter media from a power filter, plus the bio-wall, then took a piece of LR as back-up, and then just to make sure the bacteria in the filter had things to eat, I added a piece shrimp. That was all on Friday night. Sunday I got my new fish and added him to the tank.
Last night my Ammonia reading was 0.6
I feel so bad for the torture. I think I should place him in the display where at least he will have good water. This is suppose to destress him right <img src="graemlins//yell.gif" border="0" alt="[yell]" />
Please help - what is everyone's "best known methods" (BKMs)??

let me see
I took the shrimp out on Sunday before adding the new fish - I also changed 33% of the water before I started adding water to his bag. I had tested the ammonia while he was temp adjusting.
I then changed another 33% last night (Monday).
So if I wouldnt have done the shrimp it would have been fine?
