I'm under the impression that they like random/chaotic currents...as I develope my system for future SPS additions I'm developing about 20x the displays volume in turn over with a lot of random current. Seems most SPS types do best in high water flow ... plus they'll require stable water chemistry with higher than normal levels of calcium and alkalinity and of course intense lighting.

They usually enjoy strong random alternating currents.
How fast does acropora grow?
Could you refer to a single species of Acropora? I cannot give you a correct answer with the word Acropora, as some corals (such as an A. microphalma) will grow over an inch a month, while others may only grow about an inch every several years.

I have a green/purple acropora about the size of a softball, and a tan acropora about the size of a dollar bill ripped in half, with 3 stalks that look like horns.Yhe tan acropora has green bumps, that I think are polyps that will open up,but I don't know because the guy at the fish store just gave it to me for free without me getting a good look at it.I don't what kind either of the acroporas are,but as soon as I can figure out how to work my photo software,I will resize the pictures and post them.

My only problem... i am running outta space for the frags to grow :)

Kip,
Any chance for a photo of how your SCWD is rigged?
I am thinking of getting one, but I don't understand quite how it's supposed to look...

Ok, I get that, but I assume it needs its own pump and the device itself sits in the tank (not the pump). Essentially, it just opens and closes doors randomly and does not occilate?

no oscillation... but the alternating current from the "opening and closing of the doors' produces waves to and fro in your tank (depending on how you aim the outlets)... it can be used in or outta water... i use both of mine outta water
here is a pic of mine on my closed loop setup

Do you use this in place of your return from sump or in addition to?
Right now I have a return with a split Y valve going from the sump. There is also a small powerhead in the tank to increase circulation.

Can anyone tell what kind of acropora I have with the above description?
